East China Normal University started its post-graduate programs in 1952, and resumed the programs in 1978. It is among the first batch of universities to be granted the rights to confer doctor's and master's degrees. The Graduate School, which was set up in 1986, now has 9 first-rank disciplinary doctoral programs covering 42 second-rank disciplines and 14 second-rank disciplinary doctoral programs.

The school also has 118 specialities which have the right to confer master's 1degrees and 10 post-doctoral mobile stations.At present there are about 200 PhD supervisors and 4,500students studying for master's degrees, 1400 for doctor's degrees.
